1 Samuel

Chapter 1

1 NOW there was a certain man of Ramath-dokey, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Hilkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite;

2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Pannah; and Pannah had children, but Hannah had no children.

3 And this man used to go up out of his town yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

4 And when the time came, Hilkanah sacrificed, and he gave to Pannah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions;

5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah; but the LORD had shut up her womb.

6 And her rival also taunted her sorely to make her fret because the LORD had shut up her womb.

7 And Pannah did this year by year when she went up to the house of the LORD, and thus she provoked her; therefore Hannah wept and did not eat.

8 Then Hilkanah her husband said to her, Why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Behold, am I not better to you than ten sons?

9 So Hannah rose up after she had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, and she went up to the house of the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting upon a seat by the post of the temple of the LORD.

10 And she was bitter of soul, and she prayed before the LORD and wept bitterly.

11 And she made a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look upon the affliction of thy maidservant, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give to thy maidservant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth.

13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart only, and her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought her to be drunk.

14 And Eli said to her, How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from you.

15 Hannah answered and said to him, No, my lord, I am a woman full of grief; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

16 Count not your maidservant in your presence a wicked woman; for out of the abundance of my sorrow and grief have I spoken hitherto.

17 Then Eli answered and said to her, Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant you the petition that you have asked of him.

18 And she said, Let your maidservant find grace in your sight. So the woman went her way, and her countenance was no more sad.

19 And they rose up early in the morning and worshipped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramtha; and Hilkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

20 And it came to pass, in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD,

21 And the man Hilkanah and all his household went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifices of his vow.

22 But Hannah did not go up; for she said to her husband, I will wait until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide forever.

23 And Hilkanah her husband said to her, Do what seems good to you; wait until you have weaned him; may the LORD establish your word. So the woman waited, and nursed her son until she weaned him.

24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with a three-year old bullock and an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh; and the boy was very young.

25 And they slew the bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

26 Then Hannah said to Eli, I beseech you, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman that stood by you here, praying to the LORD for this boy.

27 I prayed and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of him;

28 Therefore also I have promised him to the LORD as long as he lives; for I petitioned him of the LORD. And they worshipped the LORD there.

Chapter 1

1 Now there was a certain259 man376 of Ramathaimzophim,7436 of mount2022 Ephraim,669 and his name8034 was Elkanah,511 the son1121 of Jeroham,3395 the son1121 of Elihu,453 the son1121 of Tohu,8459 the son1121 of Zuph,6689 an Ephrathite:673

2 And he had two8147 wives;802 the name8034 of the one259 was Hannah,2584 and the name8034 of the other8145 Peninnah:6444 and Peninnah6444 had1961 children,3206 but Hannah2584 had no369 children.3206

3 And this1931 man376 went5927 up out of his city5892 yearly3117 to worship7812 and to sacrifice2076 to the LORD3068 of hosts6635 in Shiloh.7887 And the two8147 sons1121 of Eli,5941 Hophni2652 and Phinehas,6372 the priests3548 of the LORD,3068 were there.8033

4 And when the time3117 was that Elkanah511 offered,2076 he gave5414 to Peninnah6444 his wife,802 and to all3605 her sons1121 and her daughters,1323 portions:4490

5 But to Hannah2584 he gave5414 a worthy639 portion;4490 for he loved157 Hannah:2584 but the LORD3068 had shut5462 up her womb.7358

6 And her adversary6869 also1571 provoked3707 her sore,3708 for to make her fret,7481 because3588 the LORD3068 had shut5462 up her womb.7358

7 And as he did6213 so3651 year8141 by year,8141 when1767 she went5927 up to the house1004 of the LORD,3068 so3651 she provoked3707 her; therefore she wept,1058 and did not eat.398

8 Then said559 Elkanah511 her husband376 to her, Hannah,2584 why4100 weep1058 you? and why4100 eat398 you not? and why4100 is your heart3824 grieved?7489 am not I better2896 to you than ten6235 sons?1121

9 So Hannah2584 rose6965 up after310 they had eaten398 in Shiloh,7887 and after310 they had drunk.8354 Now Eli5941 the priest3548 sat3427 on a seat3678 by a post4201 of the temple1964 of the LORD.3068

10 And she was in bitterness4751 of soul,5315 and prayed6419 to the LORD,3068 and wept1058 sore.

11 And she vowed5087 a vow,5088 and said,559 O LORD3068 of hosts,6635 if518 you will indeed look7200 on the affliction6040 of your handmaid,519 and remember2142 me, and not forget7911 your handmaid,519 but will give5414 to your handmaid519 a man582 child,2233 then I will give5414 him to the LORD3068 all3605 the days3117 of his life,2416 and there shall no3808 razor4177 come5927 on his head.7218

12 And it came1961 to pass, as she continued7235 praying6419 before6440 the LORD,3068 that Eli5941 marked8104 her mouth.6310

13 Now Hannah,2584 she spoke1696 in her heart;3820 only7535 her lips8193 moved,5128 but her voice6963 was not heard:8085 therefore Eli5941 thought2803 she had been drunken.7910

14 And Eli5941 said559 to her, How5704 long5704 will you be drunken?7937 put5493 away5493 your wine3196 from you.

15 And Hannah2584 answered6030 and said,559 No,3808 my lord,113 I am a woman802 of a sorrowful7186 spirit:7307 I have drunk8354 neither3808 wine3196 nor strong drink,7941 but have poured8210 out my soul5315 before6440 the LORD.3068

16 Count5414 not your handmaid519 for a daughter1323 of Belial:1100 for out of the abundance7230 of my complaint7879 and grief3708 have I spoken1696 till now.5704 2008

17 Then Eli5941 answered6030 and said,559 Go3212 in peace:7965 and the God430 of Israel3478 grant5414 you your petition7596 that you have asked7592 of him.

18 And she said,559 Let your handmaid8198 find4672 grace2580 in your sight.5869 So the woman802 went3212 her way,1870 and did eat,398 and her countenance6440 was no3808 more5750 sad.

19 And they rose7925 up in the morning1242 early,7925 and worshipped7812 before6440 the LORD,3068 and returned,7725 and came935 to their house1004 to Ramah:7414 and Elkanah511 knew3045 Hannah2584 his wife;802 and the LORD3068 remembered2142 her.

20 Why it came1961 to pass, when the time3117 was come8622 about after Hannah2584 had conceived,2029 that she bore3205 a son,1121 and called7121 his name8034 Samuel,8050 saying, Because3588 I have asked7592 him of the LORD.3068

21 And the man376 Elkanah,511 and all3605 his house,1004 went5927 up to offer2076 to the LORD3068 the yearly3117 sacrifice,2077 and his vow.5088

22 But Hannah2584 went5927 not up; for she said559 to her husband,376 I will not go up until5704 the child5288 be weaned,1580 and then I will bring935 him, that he may appear7200 before854 6440 the LORD,3068 and there8033 abide3427 for ever.5769

23 And Elkanah511 her husband376 said559 to her, Do6213 what seems5869 you good;2896 tarry3427 until5704 you have weaned1580 him; only389 the LORD3068 establish6965 his word.1697 So the woman802 stayed,3427 and gave her son1121 suck3243 until5704 she weaned1580 him.

24 And when834 she had weaned1580 him, she took5927 him up with her, with three7969 bullocks,6499 and one259 ephah374 of flour,7058 and a bottle5035 of wine,3196 and brought935 him to the house1004 of the LORD3068 in Shiloh:7887 and the child5288 was young.5288

25 And they slew7819 a bullock,6499 and brought935 the child5288 to Eli.5941

26 And she said,559 Oh994 my lord,113 as your soul5315 lives,2416 my lord,113 I am the woman802 that stood5324 by you here,2088 praying6419 to the LORD.3068

27 For this2088 child5288 I prayed;6419 and the LORD3068 has given5414 me my petition7596 which834 I asked7592 of him:

28 Therefore also1571 I have lent7592 him to the LORD;3068 as long3117 as he lives3117 he shall be lent7592 to the LORD.3068 And he worshipped7812 the LORD3068 there.8033

1 Samuel

Chapter 1

1 NOW there was a certain man of Ramath-dokey, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Hilkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite;

2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Pannah; and Pannah had children, but Hannah had no children.

2 And he had two8147 wives;802 the name8034 of the one259 was Hannah,2584 and the name8034 of the other8145 Peninnah:6444 and Peninnah6444 had1961 children,3206 but Hannah2584 had no369 children.3206

3 And this man used to go up out of his town yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

4 And when the time came, Hilkanah sacrificed, and he gave to Pannah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions;

4 And when the time3117 was that Elkanah511 offered,2076 he gave5414 to Peninnah6444 his wife,802 and to all3605 her sons1121 and her daughters,1323 portions:4490

5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah; but the LORD had shut up her womb.

5 But to Hannah2584 he gave5414 a worthy639 portion;4490 for he loved157 Hannah:2584 but the LORD3068 had shut5462 up her womb.7358

6 And her rival also taunted her sorely to make her fret because the LORD had shut up her womb.

6 And her adversary6869 also1571 provoked3707 her sore,3708 for to make her fret,7481 because3588 the LORD3068 had shut5462 up her womb.7358

7 And Pannah did this year by year when she went up to the house of the LORD, and thus she provoked her; therefore Hannah wept and did not eat.

7 And as he did6213 so3651 year8141 by year,8141 when1767 she went5927 up to the house1004 of the LORD,3068 so3651 she provoked3707 her; therefore she wept,1058 and did not eat.398

8 Then Hilkanah her husband said to her, Why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Behold, am I not better to you than ten sons?

8 Then said559 Elkanah511 her husband376 to her, Hannah,2584 why4100 weep1058 you? and why4100 eat398 you not? and why4100 is your heart3824 grieved?7489 am not I better2896 to you than ten6235 sons?1121

9 So Hannah rose up after she had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, and she went up to the house of the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting upon a seat by the post of the temple of the LORD.

9 So Hannah2584 rose6965 up after310 they had eaten398 in Shiloh,7887 and after310 they had drunk.8354 Now Eli5941 the priest3548 sat3427 on a seat3678 by a post4201 of the temple1964 of the LORD.3068

10 And she was bitter of soul, and she prayed before the LORD and wept bitterly.

10 And she was in bitterness4751 of soul,5315 and prayed6419 to the LORD,3068 and wept1058 sore.

12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth.

12 And it came1961 to pass, as she continued7235 praying6419 before6440 the LORD,3068 that Eli5941 marked8104 her mouth.6310

13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart only, and her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought her to be drunk.

13 Now Hannah,2584 she spoke1696 in her heart;3820 only7535 her lips8193 moved,5128 but her voice6963 was not heard:8085 therefore Eli5941 thought2803 she had been drunken.7910

14 And Eli said to her, How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from you.

14 And Eli5941 said559 to her, How5704 long5704 will you be drunken?7937 put5493 away5493 your wine3196 from you.

15 Hannah answered and said to him, No, my lord, I am a woman full of grief; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

16 Count not your maidservant in your presence a wicked woman; for out of the abundance of my sorrow and grief have I spoken hitherto.

16 Count5414 not your handmaid519 for a daughter1323 of Belial:1100 for out of the abundance7230 of my complaint7879 and grief3708 have I spoken1696 till now.5704 2008

17 Then Eli answered and said to her, Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant you the petition that you have asked of him.

17 Then Eli5941 answered6030 and said,559 Go3212 in peace:7965 and the God430 of Israel3478 grant5414 you your petition7596 that you have asked7592 of him.

18 And she said, Let your maidservant find grace in your sight. So the woman went her way, and her countenance was no more sad.

18 And she said,559 Let your handmaid8198 find4672 grace2580 in your sight.5869 So the woman802 went3212 her way,1870 and did eat,398 and her countenance6440 was no3808 more5750 sad.

19 And they rose up early in the morning and worshipped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramtha; and Hilkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

20 And it came to pass, in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD,

20 Why it came1961 to pass, when the time3117 was come8622 about after Hannah2584 had conceived,2029 that she bore3205 a son,1121 and called7121 his name8034 Samuel,8050 saying, Because3588 I have asked7592 him of the LORD.3068

21 And the man Hilkanah and all his household went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifices of his vow.

21 And the man376 Elkanah,511 and all3605 his house,1004 went5927 up to offer2076 to the LORD3068 the yearly3117 sacrifice,2077 and his vow.5088

22 But Hannah did not go up; for she said to her husband, I will wait until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide forever.

22 But Hannah2584 went5927 not up; for she said559 to her husband,376 I will not go up until5704 the child5288 be weaned,1580 and then I will bring935 him, that he may appear7200 before854 6440 the LORD,3068 and there8033 abide3427 for ever.5769

23 And Hilkanah her husband said to her, Do what seems good to you; wait until you have weaned him; may the LORD establish your word. So the woman waited, and nursed her son until she weaned him.

24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with a three-year old bullock and an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh; and the boy was very young.

25 And they slew the bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

25 And they slew7819 a bullock,6499 and brought935 the child5288 to Eli.5941

26 Then Hannah said to Eli, I beseech you, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman that stood by you here, praying to the LORD for this boy.

26 And she said,559 Oh994 my lord,113 as your soul5315 lives,2416 my lord,113 I am the woman802 that stood5324 by you here,2088 praying6419 to the LORD.3068

27 I prayed and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of him;

27 For this2088 child5288 I prayed;6419 and the LORD3068 has given5414 me my petition7596 which834 I asked7592 of him:

28 Therefore also I have promised him to the LORD as long as he lives; for I petitioned him of the LORD. And they worshipped the LORD there.

28 Therefore also1571 I have lent7592 him to the LORD;3068 as long3117 as he lives3117 he shall be lent7592 to the LORD.3068 And he worshipped7812 the LORD3068 there.8033
